Class Description
Pain in the jaw is enough to make anyone weep. You can help, and that help goes way beyond the masseter. We’ll discuss the anatomy and simple neurology of the jaw, the relation of the jaw to the ear and base of skull, and the mouth, and learn techniques, in and out of the mouth, to help people with TMJ and associated conditions. We’ll also learn easy exercises and images you can teach a patient or use in a session.
Hour 1: Introduction of Structures in Jaw
Hour 2: Palpation of joint and muscles
Hour 3: Intra-oral and Extra-oral Techniques
Hour 4: Cranial and Atlanto-Occipital Techniques
Hour 5: Imagery
Hour 6: Independent practice, Q&A, evaluation and questions
*****This is a hands on class and will require use of a massage table. There are no tables available at this venue, you will have to bring one.*****
About the Instructor
Dr. George Russell is a bodyworker, chiropractor, dancer, teacher and movement specialist. He teaches alignment, improvisational dance, and movement for actors, as well as many anatomy, technique and theory courses to bodyworkers, yoga practitioners, and other body-based therapists. Dr. Russell is a long-time student of Lyengar Yoga, the Rosen Method, Alexander technique, energy medicine, the 12 steps, Irene Dowd, and psychotherapy all inform his approach. Dr. Russell holds a master’s degree in Movement Studies from Wesleyan University and a summa cum laude doctorate from the University of Bridgeport.
Dr. Russell’s teaching philosophy is based on the idea that information is only useful when presented in the context of people’s lives and work. No information is presented without practical application, and spontaneity, humor, personal attention and warmth are central to his work. He has been teaching for 35 years.
Teaching credits include ongoing supervision and seminars in his own office in New York City; the American Massage Therapy Association’s National Convention; Connecticut Center for Massage Therapy; the Swedish Institute (New York); Atlantic Theater Company (New York University); Kripalu Center; The New School; Wesleyan University; Vassar College; Rutgers University; Oceanside Yoga (Virginia Beach); Evolve Yoga (Annapolis); Rivertown Yoga; Yoga Teachers’ Association of Westchester, Tao Porchon Lynch’s Teacher Certification; Yoga to the People’s Certification Program; Yoga Sutra Philadelphia Teacher Training Program; Club Fit Katonah (Massage Therapy) and de Facto Dance Company, among other places.

CEH’s will be granted only to those who register and attend the entire class. No partial credit can/will be awarded.
Cancellations of more than 14 days prior to a class are eligible for a full refund. Cancellations less than 14 days are not refundable, but monies less a $100 processing fee may be applied to any future AMTA-NY Chapter event. No shows are not eligible for refund or use on future classes. Cancellations are based on post mark or email date and all cancellations must be in writing. Exceptions made only with approval of the AMTA-NY Chapter Board of Directors. Continuing Education Credit Certificates given only upon successful completion of class. No partial credit will be issued. Partial refunds for non-completed classes given only in emergency situations and with Chapter President’s approval.

We welcome all licensed massage therapists and currently enrolled massage therapy students to our classes, however per New York State law, you must have a New York State massage therapy license to participate in the hands-on portions. (Currently enrolled students may participate in hands-on if accompanied by their school instructor.)
