Class Description:
The iliopsoas is an important muscle in lower body function and dysfunction. It is a hip flexor, but it also affects lower back and pelvic alignment. Deep, and back to front, it is often overlooked when the low back hurts. This course includes anatomy and assessment of the iliopsoas; common problems; balance of the psoas and abdominals; manual release techniques; strengthening the psoas; assisted stretching; and simple self-stretches to know and teach your patients.
This is a hands-on class. Please bring your table, lubricant, a pillowcase, paper and pen, and dress in comfortable clothes in which you feel comfortable being worked on and seen.
*****This is a hands on class and will require use of a massage table. There are no tables available at this venue, you will have to bring one.*****

Instructor; George Russell
Dr. George Russell is a bodyworker, chiropractor, dancer, teacher and movement specialist. He teaches alignment, improvisational dance, and movement for actors, as well as many anatomy, technique and theory courses to bodyworkers, yoga practitioners, and other body-based therapists. Dr. Russell is a long-time student of Lyengaryoga, the Rosen Method, Alexander technique, energy medicine, the 12 steps, Irene Dowd, and psychotherapy all inform his approach. Dr. Russell holds a master’s degree in Movement Studies from Wesleyan University and a summa cum laude doctorate from the University of Bridgeport.
Dr. Russell’s teaching philosophy is based on the idea that information is only useful when presented in the context of people’s lives and work. No information is presented without practical application, and spontaneity, humor, personal attention and warmth are central to his work. He has been teaching for 35 years.
Teaching credits include ongoing supervision and seminars in his own office in New York City; the American Massage Therapy Association’s National Convention; Connecticut Center for Massage Therapy; the Swedish Institute (New York); Atlantic Theater Company (New York University); Kripalu Center; The New School; Wesleyan University; Vassar College; Rutgers University; Oceanside Yoga (Virginia Beach); Evolve Yoga (Annapolis); Rivertown Yoga; Yoga Teachers’ Association of Westchester, Tao Porchon Lynch’s Teacher Certification; Yoga to the People’s Certification Program; Yoga Sutra Philadelphia Teacher Training Program; Club Fit Katonah (Massage Therapy) and de Facto Dance Company, among other places.
